Common Foot Issues We Help Solve
Arthritis
This very common condition often appears as pain and stiffness in the joints of the feet and ankles. Though there is no absolute cure for arthritis, there are plenty of methods you can try to alleviate pain and discomfort – and keep you moving!
Possible causes: Aging, injury, overuse
Our quick recommendations: Along with hot and cold compresses, pair quality arch supports with properly fitting footwear.
Achilles tendonitis
This injury typically presents itself as pain on the back side of your heel that can radiate through the entire area of your heel and ankle. This condition is often worse first thing in the morning, or after sitting for longer periods.
Possible causes: Typically a result of a strain at the heel position of the ankle joint and usually compounded by tightness or imbalance in the calf musculature
Our quick recommendations: To alleviate acute strain on the achilles tendon, we often add a slight wedge in the heel of a client’s footwear. We typically pair this with an insole to help keep the ankle and heel position stable, and also recommend clients use knee-high compression socks to encourage blood flow to the tendons and aid in recovery. Although the symptoms are treatable in the short term, it’s essential to see a foot health specialist for a long-term solution.
Plantar fasciitis
One of the most common foot issues we see, this condition is usually described as pain in the base of the heel that may radiate up the calf and into the arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis typically feels worse first thing in the morning or after periods of rest. It can feel especially painful during your first couple of steps, but it tends to loosen up and feel better after a few laps around the room.
Possible causes: Incorrect alignment; injury; over-use
Our quick recommendations: Get custom or over-the-counter arch supports for your footwear. Stretching, compression therapy, or a myofascial massage ball can relieve pain and promote healing to the fascia.
Gait abnormalities
The way we walk is completely unique to each of us, but it can unfortunately cause us foot, ankle and knee issues. The signs of an uneven gait often appear as pain in your foot, ankle and knee joints – and you may even notice that your footwear is wearing unevenly.
Possible causes: Genetics; injury
Our quick recommendations: Modify your footwear at our Shoe Lab! We can create custom soles to help even-out your gait, alleviate pain and protect your feet, ankles and knees for the long term.
Foot fatigue
Fatigue is that overall feeling of achy, sore, or tired feet and can cause fatigue of varying degrees. The good news is, you can relieve your feet with relatively simple solutions.
Possible causes: Being on your feet all day
Our quick recommendations: Get better footwear (shop for a more structured, supportive shoe) with quality arch supports. During periods of discomfort, pain or acute injury, we also recommend using footwear indoors. Supportive slippers, recovery footwear or sandals play a significant role in resolving a wide range of foot health conditions. Try compression socks, roller balls, and muscle stretching/strengthening exercises as directed by your pedorthist or foot health professional.
Soft tissue injuries
These can show up as “twinges” of pain in the feet and ankles on a day-to-day basis. Though it might be tempting to ignore these small pains, they can develop into a bigger problem down the road.
Possible causes: Injury; overuse
Our quick recommendations: Book a Foot Pain Assessment. Once we understand where your injury is, we can offer bracing and other supports to allow your foot or ankle to heal. Pair this with proper arch supports and rehabilitative exercises from your pedorthist – AKA us!
Chronic ankle sprains
If you think you have weak ankles or feel like your feet are always “rolling to the outside” you may be suffering from chronic ankle sprains.
Possible causes: Instability in the ankle joint, scar tissue, or weakness in the connective tissue in the ankle
Our quick recommendations: Get a Foot Assessment by a Fit Tech! There are a range of treatment options for you, from footwear and insoles, to compression sleeves or bracing. If the ankle injury is acute or you’re still recovering from a sprain, options such as air casts, ritchie braces or UCBL custom orthotics can work in conjunction with supportive footwear.
What to look for in supportive footwear
A good heel counter (to keep the ankle in an upright position) and arch supports (which can be used for realigning the ankle, managing body weight transfer and enhancing the stability of the foot). Also, look for torsional structure and stiffer midsoles. Essentially, both of these features mean your insole won’t twist or flex as much and will offer you greater support no matter the intensity of your activity.
Often, it’s a combination of these treatments that leads to enhanced stability, reduced strain on the tendons and ligaments supporting the foot and ankle, and an increase in your quality of life! The goal is to help you get back to normal as quickly as possible and reduce the risk of recurrence.
